Why Pelé is the GOAT

Why Pelé is the GOAT

Every weekend, the group chat explodes. Someone drops a clip of Messi or CR7, and suddenly everyone’s arguing about the "Greatest of All Time."

At Pelé Soccer, we live and breathe this game. We love the modern wizards as much as you do. But as a team that carries the name of the man who literally defined the Number 10, we’re here to remind you why the throne belongs to Pelé.

The GOAT debate isn't just about YouTube highlights; it’s about the soul of the game. Here is why O Rei (The King) still wears the crown.

1. The World Cup Flex (3 > 0, 1, or 2)

In the modern era, we treat winning one World Cup as the ultimate career-defining achievement. Pelé won three.

He transformed the World Cup into the biggest sporting event on Earth, and he is the only player to ever hoist that trophy three times. Period.

2. He Was the "Complete" Player (Before Science Caught Up)

If you could build a player in a lab today, you’d just end up with 1970 Pelé.

  • Right foot? Lethal.

  • Left foot? Just as dangerous.

  • Heading? He had a vertical leap that would make NBA players double-take (go watch his header in the '70 final against Italy).

  • Vision? He was a playmaker before "Expected Assists" were a thing.

He played in an era of "butcher" defenders—guys who were literally trying to end his career with every tackle—on pitches that looked like cow pastures, with a heavy leather ball that felt like a brick when wet. And he still made it look like a dance.

3. The "1,000+ Goals" Reality Check

People love to nitpick the 1,283 goals. "Oh, some were in friendlies!" they say.

Let's set the record straight: Back then, Santos (Pelé’s club) didn't play in a globalized Champions League. Instead, they toured the world like rock stars. They played "friendlies" against Real Madrid, AC Milan, and Inter Milan because everyone wanted to see the best team on the planet. Pelé was bagging goals against the best defenders in Europe week in and week out.

Stat Pelé's Numbers
Total Career Goals 1,283 (FIFA recognized)
Hat-tricks 92 (Think about that for a second)
World Cup Titles 3
Age at First WC Win 17 (The youngest ever)

4. He Stopped a War. Seriously.

When we say Pelé is the GOAT, we aren't just talking about stats. We’re talking about impact. In 1969, Santos traveled to Nigeria during a bloody civil war. Both sides agreed to a 48-hour ceasefire just so they could watch Pelé play.

That’s not just "being good at soccer." That’s being a deity with a ball at your feet.

5. The Quotes from the Legends

Even your favorite players' idols knew the score.

  • Johan Cruyff: "Pelé was the only footballer who surpassed the boundaries of logic."

  • Cristiano Ronaldo: "Pelé is the greatest player in football history, and there will only be one Pelé."

  • Tarcisio Burgnich (The defender who marked him in 1970): "I told myself before the game, 'he's made of skin and bones just like everyone else' — but I was wrong."

The Verdict

Respect to the legends of today. We are lucky to witness Messi’s grace and Ronaldo’s drive. But they are playing in a world that Pelé built. He was the first global superstar, the first to make the #10 iconic, and the first to show us that football could be art.

He didn't have sports scientists, GPS trackers, or carbon-fiber boots. He just had the ball, his genius, and a smile that captured the world.

He is O Rei. Long live the King.

What do you think? Does the three-World Cup lead settle it for you, or do you think the modern game is too different to compare? Drop by the shop or hit us up in the comments—we love a good pitch-side debate.

Actually, Arthur Friedenreich – 1,329 goals.
Also, his 1281 goals are mostly friendlies, and so is Arthur Friedenreich’s.
Josef Bican has most OFFICIAL goals, at 805, then romario at 772, THEN pele 3rd at 767.
Josef Bican should be regarded best player of all time, because he 1.52 goal ratio. MOST in history.
PELE – 767 goals 831 matches 0.92 ratio
JOSEF BICAN – 805 goals 530 matches 1.52 ratio
28 players have over 500 goals, and JOSEF BICAN has the LEAST amount of matches, but MOST goals. More than LM10 CR7 Arthur and pele and romario.
